Crop Focus

Stellar Agri Indonesia has committed significant resources in developing IPM solutions to few major crop of Indonesia which Includes Rice, Corn, Chilli and shallots. These crops are not only comprise major share in total crops grown in Indonesia, these crops also see significant propotion of pest control chemicals Usage in Indonesia.

Rice being a main staple crop in Indonesia is grown in all parts of Indonesia and around 13 million Hactare of Rice cultivation is happening in Indonesia. Indonesia being a tropical country situated on equator can very suitable for rice cultivation, Even though Indonesia sees 2 major season of rice cultivation however rice cultivation is spread across all 12 months in Indonesia.

Since rice is being planted through out the year, all stages of crops can be seen in nearby fields, which makes pest infestation for season pest like Sheath blight and brown plant hopper move from later part of season to even very early stage of crop. Similarly Rice stem borer can be seen in Indonesia even at very late stage. This forces farmer to Adhere to chemical control of all pests at all stages of crops. Not only cost of cultivation is too high with this, it severely impacts the environment and wellbeing for humans and livestock in nearby area.

Corn is second biggest crop in small holder farming which acquire about 3.5 Million hectare of Indonesia land cultivation. Usually corn in grown in rainfed areas due to its ability to grow without irrigation systems. In Indonesia it is much more common to grow corn in undulated plots due to ease of cultural practices in this crop.

Even though protection chemicals usage in corn is much lower ascomapred to other crops. It is being observed that due to constant increase in corn cultivation the pest pressure of corn has been increasing steadily. Fall Army warm has wreaked havoc in recent years in corn crop.

Chilli is very important cash crop in indoensia due to high domestic usage and hence it fetches good prices in market. To get good prices for chilli it becomes very important for farmer that the quality of fruit is best and it is free from pest damage and spots caused by diseases.

Total area under cultivation is around 400.000 Hectare in Indonesia and it is still rapidly increasing. Due to high pest pressure and good prices, farmer is highly inclined to continuously use chemical control methods to keep his crop in very good condition. Even though it Is hard for farmer to Adhere to IPM practices in chilli if he is able to fetch better price for his harvest with IPM adaptation, it is very much possible that we can bring IPM to Chilli crop in big scale.

Shallots has gained popularity amongst Indonesian farmer in recent years to very attractive commodity prices in Indonesia, but as the area under cultivation has increased rapidly the commodity prices has gone down hence simultaneously the pest pressure has gone up very fast.

While farmer still adheres to chemical control in most part of Indonesia, even in slightest reduction in commodity price can make this crop economically unviable. Since shallot crop isn’t impacted like chilli due to appearance, heavy pet pressure can reduce the bulb size hence lowering harvest as well as low per kg price of commodity.
